Use the Career Information System to Help Find a Career
Three simple stets can lead to a great career! To begin, go to www.ILWorkInfo.com/icrn and click on Career Information System (CIS).
Step 1: Decide on a direction.
Use Occupation Sort to find careers that match what you enjoy doing. Also, you can look in our Assessments & Links for helpful tools such as the O*NET Interest Profiler and the SKILLS Assessment.
If you already know what you want to do, go straight to Step 2.
Step 2: Find how to get there.
Click on Occupations, then select one that interests you. The occupation file will tell you how much it pays, what the employment outlook is, typical job duties and more. Under Related Information you’ll find the Programs of Study to prepare to enter the field. Select one and that will link to Illinois Schools offering the program. (You can also see two-year and four-year college programs nationwide.) CIS has both college majors and vocational training options after high school – something to cover almost every career goal.
Step 3: Figure out how to pay for it.
Use Financial Aid Sort to locate scholarships, loans and special awards. These can help pay for the training and education you need to enter your chosen occupation. Get a customized list (for free!) of look at the Financial Aid file to see all aid opportunities. Use the FAQs to learn about how to apply.
There’s a lot more in CIS, such as Job Search and Course Planner that can help you succeed. Use all the features of the Career Information System to explore as you gain experience.
