- If you don’t already have a PIN number, apply for one at www.pin.ed.gov
- Have a parent get a PIN as well
- Go to www.FAFSA.ed.gov to examine the list of documents you will need to fill out a FAFSA
- Fill out a pre-application worksheet
- As soon after Jan. 1 as possible, fill out the application
- Once completed, review all answers carefully
- If your parent has a PIN, have him or her electronically sign the application. Otherwise he or she must print a paper signature page from FAFSA, sign it and mail it in.
- Submit the application
- Upon submission you will receive a confirmation page that shows your Estimated Expected family Contribution (EFC). This is the number colleges use to determine the types and amounts of aid for which you are eligible. Print a copy of this page.
- In about 2 weeks you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) in the mail or an e-mail with a link to your SAR info.
